Gratitude Opens Us

Appreciation is the vesselĀ for future blessings.

- Michael Berg

What is Prayer?

According to Richard Rohr,

Prayer is sitting in the silence until it silences us, choosing gratitude until we are grateful, praising GodĀ  until we ourselves are a constant act of praise.
- From Radical Grace: Daily Meditations

In other words, we become what we do.

How, then, shall we live?

Wisdom from Willie Nelson

When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.

Thanksgiving and Praise

Monday’s Responsorial Psalm is Psalm 100:1-5.

The Lord made us; we belong to God.

Sing joyfully to God, all you lands;
serve God with gladness:
come before God with joyful singing.

The Lord made us; we belong to God.

Know that the Lord is God;
God made us;
we are God’s people – God’s lovingly tended flock.

The Lord made us; we belong to God.

Enter God’s gates with thanksgiving,
and God’s courts with praise;
Give thanks to God; bless God’s name.

The Lord made us; we belong to God.

For God is good:
The Lord, whose kindness endures forever,
with faithfulness to all generations.

The Lord made us; we belong to God.

Giving Thanks with the Guitar

Me . . . pensively giving thanks with the guitar

Friday’s Responsorial Psalm 33 charges us to give thanks musically.

Give thanks to God on the harp;
with the ten-stringed lyre chant God’s praises.”

I choose the six-stringed guitar!

Sunflowers Give Thanks!

Is there anything that can give thanks quite like a sunflower?

Thursday’s Responsorial is Psalm 145. Here is a verse from it:

Let all your works give you thanks, O God,
and let your faithful ones bless you.
Let them discourse of the glory of your Kingdom
and speak of your might.”

Merton on Gratitude

To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer on Gratitude

In ordinary life we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.”

- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

More on Gratitude

Would that my heart opened as bright and as clear as this wild flower.

Beauty is God’s Handwriting

I hope I never tire of being reminded at the closeness of God’s presence to us. And I hope that some good day, I will not need to be reminded, but find that presence in all its infinite manifestations. Today’s reminder comes from Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful; for beauty is God’s handwriting – a wayside sacrament. Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every fair flower, and thank God for it as a cup of blessing.
