Mary Oliver seems to be popping up everywhere in my life. I am a former Episcopalian who has embraced my family’s Jewish heritage and converted to Judaism. I still attend Episcopal services from time to time, and recently the priest used Mary Oliver’s poem “The Summer Day” as the basis for his homily. Today, I was doing Torah study, and the rabbi leading the study used that same poem as a supplement to the Biblical text, Deuteronomy 30:1-20. The rabbi also told us that when she was in rabbinical school she wrote a paper on Mary Oliver, and almost didn’t pass the course because Mary Oliver wasn’t Jewish. LOL
