Merry Christmas – 2019

The whole world is a series of miracles, but we’re so used to them we call them ordinary things.

– Hans Christian Andersen

This is a Chihuly glass work. It was hanging from the ceiling, but because it looked so like a tree, I turned it upside down.

Recipe for a Happy New Year

seattle_2012_044

Take twelve whole months.
Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness,
hate, and jealousy.
Make them just as fresh and clean as possible.

Now cut each month into twenty-eight, thirty, or
thirty-one different parts,
but don’t make up the whole batch at once.

Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients.

Mix well into each day one part of faith,
one part of patience, one part of courage,
and one part of work.
Add to each day one part of hope,
faithfulness, generosity, and kindness.
Blend with one part prayer, one part meditation,
and one good deed.
Season the whole with a dash of good spirits,
a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play,
and a cupful of good humor.

Pour all of this into a vessel of love.
Cook thoroughly over radiant joy,
garnish wit a smile,
serve with quietness, unselfishness,
and cheerfulness.
You’re bound to have a happy new year.

The Poet Speaks Again

To live, we must daily break the body and shed the book of creation. When we do it knowingly, lovingly, skillfully, reverently, it is a sacrament. When we do it ignorantly, greedily, destructively, it is a desecration.

– Wendell Berry, The Gift of Good Land

Love, the Key to Hope

Art - an expression of love, and an expression of hope

Art – an expression of love, and an expression of hope

Today’s Gospel story, on this 5th Sunday of Lent, is the raising of Lazarus from the dead. We are reminded, then, to hope when our situation looks bleakest.

True love is embodied in expectancy, an eagerness to love God now as a preparation for God’s Kingdom. Our ultimate hopes are expressed by whom and what and how we now love…. True love is embodied in the act of giving and forgiving, without stint or stipulations, without anxiety or compulsion. The forgiven is not made dependent upon the giver, but upon a free un-coerced love.

Light and Beauty – Light and Salvation

Today’s Responsorial Psalm is from Psalm 27.

The Lord is my light and my salvation.

The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life’s refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?

The Lord is my light and my salvation.
